The Church of the Immaculate Conception
East Germantown, Philadelphia Pa
The Closing of Immaculate Conception Parish
By now, you know that our beloved Immaculate Conception Parish, which served the East Germantown community for 110 years, has been closed by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, effective June 30, 2012. The closing by the Archdiocese was part of a restructuring effort of the Catholic Church in the northwestern part of the city. St. Francis of Assisi and St. Vincent de Paul also closed, with a new parish created on the site of the former St. Vincent de Paul. The new parish is called St. Vincent de Paul, probably out of respect for the Vincentians that administered all three parishes, their long history in Germantown, and the fact that St. Vincent de Paul was the name of the Catholic mother church in Germantown that was established by the Vincentians. It is now the sole church serving the Catholic community in Germantown. The reality is, the Catholic Church has been in decline in Germantown for decades and the Archdiocese has been subsidizing all of these Germantown churches since the 1980s. IC, itself, was down to 250 families, a number that was projected to continue to decline and Sunday Mass attendance was down to around 100. Something had to give... But, the stark facts and reality doesn't lessen the pain and heartbreak we all feel at the closing of our beloved Immaculate Conception. It is like the passing of a beloved friend, one that has made such an impact in our lives and one that we will never forget. The Closing Mass was on Sunday, June 24 at 11:00am, followed by a catered luncheon onsite. An estimated 1,200 were in attendance at the Closing Mass, so it was good to see that majestic church filled once gain. The sadness is that we will never see it filled again as our beloved Immaculate Conception Church. While the Archdiocese closed Immaculate Conception, they can never, ever, close the wonderful memories, great times and great people we met in this grand old parish. Immaculate Conception lives on in our heart, in our minds and in our memories....
A purpose of this website is to help remember, and to keep alive those great memories and the rich history, that was our Immaculate Conception....

Friends of Immaculate is a loosely based group of folks that have some connection to, or just an interest in, Immaculate Conception Parish in the East Germantown section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, past or present. The Friends of Immaculate website is a vehicle for reconnecting and remembering our days in that grand old parish and/or in that great old neighborhood of Germantown. It is a means for reconnecting with classmates, friends and neighbors from the old neighborhood, and even to make new friends. The website also serves to give notice of any IC-related events, such as such as reunions, golf outings, fundraisers, etc. Though our core roots are with that wonderful old parish, we equally welcome those who may not be connected to the parish in any way but have an interest and love of the Germantown of old because a purpose of this website is also to provide an enjoyable trip down memory lane.
